Pantanal

ABOUT PANTANAL

In the heart of South America, where life is deeply connected to the rhythm of the waters, lies the Pantanal: the largest tropical wetland on Earth and one of the world's most extraordinary wildlife destinations.

Renowned as the premier location for observing and photographing South America's distinctive mammal fauna, the Pantanal is also among Brazil's finest birdwatching destinations. More than 650 bird species have been recorded in the region, including iconic species such as the Hyacinth Macaw, the world's largest parrot, and the Jabiru, the largest stork in the Americas and the symbol of the Pantanal.

Most of the Pantanal is located within the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, in the country's Central-West region. The main gateways to the region are the state capitals of Cuiabá, which provides access to the Northern Pantanal, and Campo Grande, the starting point for exploring the Southern Pantanal. We offer itineraries ranging from 5 to 10 days in each region, as well as our signature 14-day journey designed for travelers seeking the most complete Pantanal experience.

The Pantanal is a vast floodplain shaped by a unique hydrological cycle. Surrounded by the highlands of Central Brazil, the Serra da Bodoquena, and the foothills of the Andes, the region receives enormous volumes of water during the rainy season, which typically extends from September through March. Rainwater flowing from the surrounding plateaus gradually floods the lowlands before slowly draining southward through the Paraguay River. This annual cycle of flooding and recession creates one of the most productive ecosystems on the planet, enriching the landscape with nutrients and sustaining an exceptional abundance of wildlife.

As the waters recede between April and September, animals become increasingly concentrated around rivers, lagoons, and remaining water sources, creating superb wildlife viewing opportunities. This seasonal dynamic is one of the reasons why the Brazilian Pantanal is widely regarded as the best place in South America to observe large mammals in the wild.

The region offers unparalleled opportunities to encounter Giant Anteaters, Southern Tamanduas, Giant Otters, Tapirs, Capybaras, Crab-eating Foxes, Ocelots, and, most notably, the Jaguar. The Northern Pantanal, particularly the Porto Jofre region, has become internationally recognized as the world's leading destination for Jaguar observation and photography. Visitors may also encounter Armadillos, Agoutis, Puma, Jaguarundi, Pantanal Cat, and, with some luck, the elusive Maned Wolf.

Birdwatchers are equally rewarded. With expert guidance, it is not uncommon to record more than 100 bird species in a single day. Beyond the famous Hyacinth Macaw and Jabiru, the region supports an astonishing diversity of raptors, waterbirds, parrots, herons, kingfishers, and songbirds, making it one of the richest birding destinations in the Neotropics.

With its predominantly open landscapes, abundant wildlife, and exceptional natural light, the Pantanal is also considered a paradise for nature photographers. Whether your interest lies in birdwatching, mammal observation, photography, or simply experiencing one of the world's last great wildernesses, the Pantanal offers unforgettable encounters with the remarkable biodiversity of South America.
