The State protects the only known population of the Cherry-throated Tanager, and gives access to pristine forests with dozens of endemics  and even chance for harpy eagles.

In the mountains around Rio de Janeiro, one finds great rainforest reserves, and jewels like endangered Golden Lion-Tamarin, Grey-winged Cotinga, Red-billed Curassow, among many others, that can be combined with a visit to the paradisic Rio de Janeiro city.
