Cerrado is the name given to the mega-diverse Central-Brazil Savannas, that covers a total area of 2.045.000 km2 (23% of the country territory), home to more than 6 thousand plant species, 200 mammal species, 800 species of birds and 1200 species of fish, which swim by thrre major river basins of South America. As almost exclusive to Brazil, it hosts many brazilian endemics, that includes some gems like Hyacinth Visorbearer , Horned Sungem, Cock-tailed Tyrant, Yellow-billed Blue-finch and Brazilian Merganser.
We organize custom tours to some of the most important destinations for bird, mammal and butterfly watching in this biome, searching for it´s rare animals, elusive birds and magnificent landscapes.
Lying thru more than 1000km in the brazilian central plateau, the Espinhaço Mountain range is very special birding area as it is home to some very special endemics and Cerrado specialities, between the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais. It´s southern part can be accessed from Belo Horizonte, 95 km away, an it´s protected within the Serra do Cipó National Park. The landscapes found here include gallery forest, cerrado-bush and rocky outcrops. With less extensive vegetation, the outcrops are home to a very special bird fauna that includes that very restricted-rangeCipó Canastero (Asthenes luizae), Hyacinth Visorbearer (Augastes scutatus), Horned Sungem(Heliactin bilophus), Cinereous Warbling-Finch (Poospiza cinerea), and the recently-described Cipo Cinclodes (Cinclodes espinhacensis)
The Private Reserve and the very beautiful Monastery of Caraça lies in the mountains of Minas Gerais, between 1.200 and 2000m of altitude. The place has basic but confortable lodging, where one can stay for very good birding in different types of montane forest fisionomies and the rocky outcrops at higher elevations, where bird fauna can vary even within a short walk.
Key-birds here include the endemic Serra Antwren (Formicivora serrana). Hyacinth Visorbearer (Augastes scutatus), Grey-backed Tachuri (Polysticus superciliaris) and Itatiaia Spinetail(Oreophylax moreirae) are found in the Rocky outcrop fields. A variety of endemics of the montane atlantic forest can also be found, like Dusky-tailed and Ochre-rumped Antbird (Drymophila malura and D. ochropyga), Giant Antshrike (Batara cinerea), White-breasted Tapaculo(Eleoscytalopus indigoticus) and Velvety Black-Tyrant (Knipolegus nigerrimus).
In south-west Minas Gerais state lies the highland plateau of Serra da Canastra and theNational Park with the same name that protects a large stretch of Cerrado ecossystem, including grasslands and fields in the higher part, and gallery forests in the lower parts.
The grasslands and fields of the higher parts is home to gems like the Cock-tailed Tyrant(Alectrutus tricolor), Sharp-tailed Tyrant (Culicivora caudacuta), White-rumped Tanager (Cypsnagra hirundinacea), Campo Miner (Geobates poecilopterus), Ochre-breasted Pipit (Anthus nattereri) within a good selection of cerrado-endemics.
The many rivers that are born in this plateau flow down to form one of the biggest brazilian river, the São Francisco River. By the small streams here, stand dense gallery-forest that is home to the secretive Brazilian Tapaculo (Scytalopus novacapitalis). Where it flows in rapids and form ponds is home to the critically endangered Brazilian Merganser (Mergus octosetaceus).
From the brazilian Capital, Brasília, located in the Central-West Brazil is possible to visit this National Park, inserted in one of the oldest rock formations in the planet, formed by quartz with outcrops of crystals that for many years attracted the attention of smugglers and the jewels market.
Nowadays the region is also famous by it´s astonishing landscapes that include impressive waterfalls, deep canyons, within a wide variety of Cerrado habitats and visitors look for different jewels like Cock-tailed Tyrant (Alectrutus tricolor), Yellow-billed Blue-finch (Porphyrospiza caerulescens) and the Brazilian Merganser (Mergus octosetaceus).
Other Cerrado specialities include Sedge Wren (Cistothorus platensis), Sharp-tailed Tyrant (Culicivora caudacuta), Collared Crescent-chest (Melanopareia torquata). Yellow-faced Parrot (Alipiopsitta xanthops).
Equidistant of three important cities in the Central Brazil, Cuiabá, Campo Grande and the capital Brasília, Emas National Park protects Brazil´s best remmaining of the Cerrado grasslands, as well as good stretches of gallery forest. Rarities such as recently rediscovered Cone-billed Tanager (Conothraupis mesoleuca), Crowned Eagle (Harpyhaliaetus corunatus), White-winged Nightjar (Eleothreptus candicans), Bearded Tachuri (Polysticus pectoralis), Marsh Seedeater (Sporophila palustris) can be found, and many other Cerrado endemics like Spotted and Lesser Nothura (Nothura maculosa and N. minor), Dwarf Tinamou (Taoniscus nanus), Collared Crescent-chest (Melanopareia torquata), Cock-tailed Tyrant (Alectrutus tricolor).
The place also has probably the best selection of mammals in South America, and highlights include Giant Armadillo, Jaguar, Maned Wolf, Brazilian Tapir and many other
