BIRDING TOUR SOUTHERN SÃO PAULO

This tour is designed to maximize opportunities to observe the greatest possible diversity of Atlantic Forest endemic birds in just one week.

The expedition explores some of the most important remaining areas of the Great Atlantic Forest Reserve, combining coastal ecosystems, lower-elevation forests, and montane habitats. Trails and roads allow us to cover significant distances on foot while searching for the remarkable diversity of bird species found throughout the region.

The itinerary includes the coastal ecosystems of Peruíbe, the lowland and foothill forests of Legado das Águas, and three nights in the mountains of Intervales State Park, one of the most important birdwatching destinations in the Atlantic Forest.

Meet at São Paulo Airport or at your hotel in the morning, followed by a transfer to Intervales State Park. Upon arrival, we begin birding around the park headquarters and accommodation area. Possible species include Araucaria Tit-Spinetail, Red-and-green Macaw, Diademed Tanager, Chestnut-backed Tanager, Black-legged Dacnis, and Swallow-tailed Cotinga.

Two full days exploring the trails of Intervales State Park with an expert local guide.

Target species include Helmeted Woodpecker, Spot-winged Wood-Quail, Giant Antshrike, Blue Manakin, Bertoni’s Antbird, Slaty Bristlefront, Black-fronted Piping Guan, and Hooded Berryeater, among many others. Night birding may also produce excellent opportunities for species such as Long-trained Nightjar, Barred Owl, and Long-tufted Screech-Owl.

After some early morning birding in Intervales, we head towards Legado das Águas, where we will explore the lower-elevation Atlantic Forest.

After lunch, we begin birding along some of the reserve’s excellent trails.

Target species include Russet-winged Spadebill, Black-headed Berryeater, Salvadori’s Antwren, Buff-throated Purpletuft, Saffron Toucanet, and many others.

After early morning birding at Legado das Águas, we head down to the coast and the city of Peruíbe.

In the afternoon, we explore the region’s coastal ecosystems. Target species include Black-backed Tanager, Bicolored Conebill, Mangrove Rail, Scissor-tailed Nightjar, and Azure Jay, among others.

We begin with early morning birding in the neighboring city of Itanhaém, where we will look for Red-tailed Parrots emerging from their night roost.

Other targets include Spot-billed Toucanet, Buff-bellied Puffbird, and the Atlantic Forest form of Channel-billed Toucan.

After lunch, we begin our drive back to São Paulo.
